Urban areas and populations are growing. In developed countries, much of the current building stock will still exist in 30 years due to the focus on reducing embodied emissions by prioritizing retrofitting and sufficiency over new constructions. Even in temperate climates, urban residential cooling will become increasingly important due to the urban heat island effect and climate change. Vulnerable people are disproportionately affected by the lack of residential cooling. Passive cooling strategies are one option to limit future energy consumption for building cooling and impacting indoor thermal comfort. Extensive research on passive cooling suitable for existing buildings, including cross and stack ventilation,
and solar shading, has been conducted in recent years [Jiang23]. [...]
