Römerbad Wien-Leopoldstadt : die Reaktivierung einer Badeanlage aus dem 19. Jahrhundert

Abstract

Durch die Reaktivierung des Römerbades in der Leopoldstadt in Wien als städtische Therme soll unter der Berücksichtigung der Historie und des kulturellen Wertes des Gebäudes ein sozialer Treffpunkt für die Nachbarschaft entstehen. Im Gegensatz zu den großmaßstäblichen Thermen wie Oberlaa, soll das Bad Teil des alltäglichen Lebens der Besucherinnen und Besucher sein. Dabei stützen sich die Maßnahmen und Leitgedanken des Entwurfes auf die Aufarbeitung der Badekultur Wiens in Verbindung mit dem typologischen Vergleich von diversen Badeanstalten. Um den städtischen Charakter zu unterstreichen und auch das Thema der Leistbarkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit zu unterstützen, soll auf den ursprünglichen Baukörper eine Aufstockung erfolgen, um zusätzlichen Wohnraum zu schaffen. In Verbindung mit der Etablierung von Gastronomie innerhalb des Römerbadkomplexes und der Aktivierung sowie Entsiegelung der Innenhoffläche entsteht so eine Symbiose aus öffentlichem und privatem Raum, aus Alltag und Freizeit sowie eine bewusste Kombination aus Altem und Neuem. Auf diese Weise werden die drei Kernthemen dieser Arbeit - Erholung, Geschichte und Nachbarschaft - realisiert.

Through the reactivation of the Römerbad into an urban thermal spa, taking into account the history and cultural value of the building, a social meeting point for the neighborhood is to be created. In contrast to large-scale spas like Oberlaa, the bath is intended to be part of the daily life of its visitors. The design’s measures and guiding principles are based on the exploration of Vienna‘s bathing culture in connection with the typological comparison of various bathhouses. To emphasize the urban character and also support the issue of affordability and economic viability, the original building structure will be extended to create additional living space. In connection with the establishment of gastronomy within the Römerbad complex and the activation and de-sealing of the inner courtyard, a symbiosis of public and private spaces, of everyday life and leisure, as well as a conscious combination of old and new, is created. In this way, the three core themes of this work - recreation, history, and neighborhood - are realized.
