dc.description.abstract
Electricity grids cannot store energy. In order for an electricity grid to function, generation of electricity has to equal consumption at all times. Balancing energy is responsible for maintaining the equilibrium between supply and demand in an electricity grid. The demand for balancing energy is notoriously hard to predict, so control reserves should always be available. Blackouts of electricity generating units as well as generation from volatile sources such as wind and photovoltaic energy are some of the possible driving forces behind balancing energy. This thesis contains a statistical analysis of quarter-hourly time series data of the secondary and tertiary control reserves in Austria. The empirical autocorrelations are interpreted, seasonal components are identified and tests for unit roots are applied to the time series under consideration. Furthermore econometric models are used for modeling the dependencies between balancing energy and other variables of the electricity market. In particular a linear regression model, a Tobit model, SARIMA and weighted k-Nearest Neighbour Regression are considered. The most influential variables are the same for all considered models: electricity generation from wind energy and the associated forecast error as well as unintentional import/export of electricity between the Austrian control area and other control areas. In addition intraday-forecasts are computed and evaluated. Comparing the results shows that the linear regression model and the Tobit model produce the best results.
