From the north to the south : a cross-sectional route of Crete : 9 site-specific interventions in Chania

Abstract

Die Insel Kreta ist einer der südlichsten Teile Europas und die größte Insel Griechenlands. Eine große Gebirgskette erstreckt sich über die gesamte Insel und bildet eine Art Trennlinie zwischen dem nördlichen und südlichen Teil Kretas. Gleichzeitig schafft sie eine klimatische, topografische, soziale und kulturelle Vielfalt, die von großer Bedeutung ist und zur Einzigartigkeit der Insel beiträgt.Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, eine vielfältige Kohärenz entlang von Querschnittsrouten auf Kreta aufzuzeigen als auch regionale Strategie vom Norden bis zum Süden und zurück in der Gemeinde Chania zu entwickeln. Diese Strategie besteht aus 9 standortspezifischen Projekten in der westlichen Region Kretas, Chania. Die Merkmale der Standorte finden sich auf der gesamten Insel wieder, sodass die Maßnahmen in ähnlichen Szenarien auf der ganzen Insel angewendet werden könnten.Basierend auf den europäischen Stadt- und Regionalstrategien,die Griechenland in den letzten Jahren in 13 verschiedenen Regionen anwendet, war Kreta die erste Region, die sich diesen Programmen angeschlossen hat.

The isle of Crete is one of the southern most parts of Europe and the largest island in Greece. A large mountain range stretches across the entire island, forming a kind of dividing line between the northern and southern parts of Crete. At the same time it creates a climatic, topographical, social and cultural diversity that is of great importance and contributes to the island’s uniqueness.The aim of this thesis is to shed light on a diverse coherence along cross-sectional routes in Crete and develop a regional strategy from the north to the south and back, in the Municipality of Chania. This strategy consists of 9 site specific projects in the western region of Crete, Chania. The site’s characteristics can be found across the whole island and therefore the interventions could be applied along the island in similar scenarios.Based on the European urban and regional strategies, Greece is applying the last years in the 13 different regions. Crete was the first region, which joined these programms.
