Beyond the threshold : spatial relations through the concept of Ma

Abstract

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Erstellung räumlicher Beziehung anhand des japanischen Konzepts von Ma 間. Ma dient dabei als Grundlage für das Verständnis der japanischen Bautradition. Die Arbeit beginnt mit der Erforschung historischer und kultureller Wurzeln von Ma in der japanischen Kultur, Kunst und Architektur. Sie untersucht, wie traditionelle Wohngebäude wie die Minka oder das Machiya-Stadthaus Ma in gebauter Form realisieren. Dieser analytische Ansatz offenbart eine Architektur, die durch Schwellen und vermittelnde Räume definiert ist: die Engawa (Veranda), der Tsuboniwa (Innerer Garten) oder die Roji (Gasse) werden zu Orten der Begegnung zwischen Mensch, Natur und gebautem Raum.Ausgehend von dieser theoretischen und historischen Grundlage entwickelt die Arbeit drei Essays, die sich mit wesentlichen Konzepten zur Raumbeziehung beschäftigen. Diese werden im Zusammenhang mit den aktuellen Herausforderungen des Wohnungsbaus beleuchtet. Sie umfassen das Feld der räumlichen Ambiguität, die Transparenz und den negativen Raum und definieren Sie als Mittel, um die Vermittlung zwischen privatem und öffentlichem Wohnraum neu zu denken. Zeitgenössische Wohnprojekte japanischer Architekten wie der Wohnkomplex Nishinoyama von Kazujo Sejima helfen dabei, den Diskurs in der Gegenwart zu verorten. Der Entwurf eines Wohnkomplexes in Kyōto setzt diese Überlegungen in die Praxis um. Er schlägt eine Architektur vor, in der Schwellenräume zum Vermittler dualer Eigenschaften werden. Privatsphäre und Öffentlichkeit koexisitern dabei in einem Feld der gegensätzlichen Beziehung. Ma wird somit zum konkreten Ansatz für den Raumentwurf im Wohnbau, der sich nicht in Schwarz-Weiß kategorisieren lässt, sondern alle Graubereiche zulässt, die sich durch Raumschichte, Schwellen und Negativraum ergeben.

This thesis examines the creation of spatial relations based on the Japanese concept of ma 間. Ma serves as the basis for understanding Japanese architectural tradition. The thesis begins by exploring the historical and cultural roots of Ma in Japanese culture, art and architecture. It examines how traditional residential buildings such as the Minka or the Machiya townhouse realise ma in built form. This analytical approach reveals an architecture defined by thresholds and mediating spaces: the Engawa (veranda), the Tsuboniwa (inner garden) and the Roji (alleyway) become places of encounter between people, nature and built space.Based on this theoretical and historical foundation, the work develops three essays that deal with essential concepts of spatial relations. These are examined in the context of the current challenges of housing construction. They cover the field of spatial ambiguity, transparency and negative space, defining them as means of rethinking the mediation between private and public living space. Contemporary housing projects by Japanese architects, such as the Nishinoyama residential complex by Kazujo Sejima, help to situate the discourse in the present. The design of a residential complex in Kyōto puts these considerations into practice. It proposes an architecture in which threshold spaces become mediators of dual characteristics. Privacy and public space coexist in a field of contrasting relationships. Ma thus becomes a tangible approach to spatial design in residential construction. The resulting housing complex cannot be categorised in terms of black and white, but welcomes all the grey areas of in between spaces, ambiguous space and layered space.
