For exploring the intrinsic priorities of architecture and the factors that determine them, this paper investigates the features of a planned project that examines black hair tents, a vernacular architectural form developed by nomadic cultures over centuries. Architecture, at its core, can address climate adaptation, sustainability, and human comfort as foundational principles. These priorities seem to be particularly evident in vernacular structures, which have been refined over generations to align with local conditions and needs (Rudofsky 1964, p.2).
Sustainable architecture and development are also emphasized priorities in the contemporary world (Bungau, Bungau, Prada, & Prada, 2022). Given the environmental crises of recent decades, the concept of sustainability, with a focus on environmental preservation to meet the needs of future generations, has always been a key priority in architectural design and urban planning. (McLennan, 2004, pp.9)
The authors’ planned research project examines black hair tents—traditional shelters used by nomadic communities across Northern Africa, Western Asia, and the Tibetan Plateau (Andrews 1990, Feilberg 1944, carte II)- and is a basis for investigating how architecture inherently prioritizes environmental responsiveness and human-centric resilience. Despite the tents’ dark fabric, which intuitively suggests heat accumulation, black hair tents leverage material properties and structural geometry to facilitate passive cooling and occupant comfort. By interrogating the design and performance, the study also contributes to the discourse on how inherent architectural priorities can be harnessed to inform sustainable and climate-responsive modern building practices.
