Structural skins, such as ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) foil, are already known for their interesting thermal, acoustic, visual, and structural properties. However, their impact on acoustic comfort has yet to be fully explored. Foil-based structures can enhance indoor comfort, reduce environmental impact, and cut costs.
Successful projects featuring modern foil-based roof structures have positively impacted acoustic comfort. Designing large shopping malls, restaurants, and shops is essential, as it indirectly influences economic success by affecting customer satisfaction.
This chapter overviews research work performed in this field during the last decade. It discusses the acoustic properties of ETFE foils and cushion systems and the influence of ETFE cushions used for roof claddings on acoustic comfort inside large rooms.
