The outward relocation of production facilities to suburban zones has contributed to rising land consumption, urban sprawl and increased environmental impact. This paper explores whether and how historic industrial buildings in Vienna, Austria can be reintegrated into the urban fabric as sites for modern production. Focusing on 19 former industrial buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the study assesses their reuse potential for manufacturing through analysis of architectural topologies, historical functions, spatial structures, zoning conditions and logistical infrastructure. A custom-developed parameter catalogue enables comparative evaluation of each site’s suitability for reintegration. The goal is to contribute to the “productive city” concept by identifying how existing buildings can support sustainable urban manufacturing, reduce sprawl, and foster circular economy practices. The findings highlight how flexible load- bearing systems, vertical production configurations, and urban siting enhance integration. Social and logistical aspects like access to employment and shorter transport routes reinforce the urban value of industrial reuse, despite regulatory constraints.
