Hard-to-abate industrial sectors, including cement, steel, chemical, and refinery industries, account for approximately 25% of global energy consumption and around 20% of total CO₂ emissions [1]. Integrating Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilization (CCS/CCU) systems presents a promising pathway for decarbonizing these sectors. However, the transition toward sustainable industrial systems involves complex integration challenges, particularly in the face of rapidly evolving environmental conditions and technological advancements [2]. This study introduces a Prospective Life Cycle Optimization (pLCO) framework designed to navigate these dynamic shifts in both background and foreground systems, modeling and evaluating CCS/CCU networks for cement industry. The framework optimizes integration designs across a range of scenarios spanning 2025 to 2050. The optimization problem is formulated as a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model, balancing environmental metrics derived from prospective life cycle assessment (pLCA) with total levelized production costs assessed through prospective techno-economic assessment (pTEA). To address uncertainties inherent in prospective system integration, a multi-scenario stochastic optimization approach is employed. This approach accounts for variables such as emissions, carbon pricing, production costs, CO₂ storage capacities, and product pricing uncertainties. Case studies explore a superstructure network for CCS/CCU integration into cement industry, considering six carbon capture technologies, five transportation modes, domestic storage in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, North Sea CO₂ storage sites, CO₂ mineralization into carbonates, and CO₂ refining with green hydrogen into synthetic fuels and chemicals. The findings highlight that reducing CO₂ capture technology costs, optimizing transportation networks, and ensuring the availability of domestic storage sites are pivotal to enhancing the cost-effectiveness of CCS. The viability of CCU depends on further reductions in infrastructure and operational costs, the value of avoided carbon taxes, and incentives for CO₂-based products. The economic benefits of CCS deployment will decline as the scale of CCU production increases, especially for landlocked countries that need to transport CO2 over long distances to the North Sea. This study emphasizes the critical role of comprehensive modeling and optimization in integrating CCS/CCU technologies into hard-to-abate industrial sectors, charting pathways toward economic and environmental sustainability.
