dc.description.abstract
Although research on customisable and shape-changing displays is a dynamic sub-field within Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), the typical computer work environment has remained unchanged for many years. Here, we survey past work in HCI that can contribute to the development of new interactive spaces for work, which we call Reconfigurable Interactive Desktop Environments (RIDEs). We analyze 19 systems, differing in geometry, principle, interface, and scale. In our review, we detail the technical properties of the systems, their areas of application, and thee methodologies used to investigate them. We then explore the potential of RIDEs to provide more equitable interactive spaces, supporting the needs of diverse users. We also identify current challenges for the implementation of RIDES, which should be the subject of future work. The research directions outlined in this study could inspire the development of future, dynamic workplaces that go beyond the static desk-and-chair setup.
