dc.description.abstract
The application of the Urban Density Lab method as part of the cooperation between the Lviv City Planning Office and our two schools of architecture of Lviv Polytechnic and TU Wien led to a lively dialogue between academia and practice on current issues of urban transformation
even before the full-scale invasion. The academic contribution to this dialogue is manifested in numerous urban design projects that were developed in four Urban Density Labs between 2017 and 2020.
For these four consecutive design studios, the respective Chief Architects (Julian Chaplinsky 2015
– 2019 and Anton Kolomieitsev since 2019) selected a total of eight locations for the academic work. Of these eight locations, six can be characterised under the term ’transformation of (industrial) brownfield sites‘, while two locations are post-war residential neighbourhoods undergoing a retrofit upgrading process.
A prioritised selection of 16 projects on five of the eight mentioned sites in Lviv is shown in this Chapter. In order to categorise the academic projects in terms of content, all locations are portrayed in advance by means of urban planning characteristics, historical references, and the specific design requirements.
