Abstract:
This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in 2022 at the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica on the effects of seismicity in Ostia Antica and other centres of Roman Italy. The contributions are grouped according to several major themes. After a methodological introduction (part 1), they address the general problem of seismic activity in Ostia (part 2), and then go into more detail on individual monuments (part 3). Further essays deepen our understanding of the characteristics and geo-seismological events of the ancient Ostiense territory (part 4). In parts 5 and 6, contributions discuss archaeoseismology in Rome, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, as well as select territories of Roman Spain. One chapter also examines the anthropology and oral history of natural disasters. A concluding chapter, written by the Director of the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, outlines key takeaways from the conference, and outlines future avenues of research.
