Academic Contributions for Lviv & Ukraine : Milestones of the cxooperation between Lviv Polytechnic and TU Wien

Abstract

In 1995, four years after the independence of Ukraine, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Institute of Architecture and Design, and the Vienna University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Planning entered into an academic cooperation agreement. Since then, our two schools of architecture have been cooperating for almost three decades in a sustainable manner using different methods in teach- ing and research with financial and administrative support from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research (BMbwf) and the OeAD-GmbH. In our practical work within this cooperation, the reference to practical challenges and socially relevant trends was and is of great importance. In this context, we have maintained close contact with the Lviv City Council in our research-led teaching. This open interpretation of our academic cooperation meant that we were able to derive the design tasks for students mostly from specific requirements of the current urban development of Lviv (and occasionally other Ukrainian cities).
