Frequency non-local effects on the breakdown of the many-electron perturbation theory

Abstract

Diese Arbeit untersucht das pathologische Verhalten des Selbstenergie-Funktionals Σ[G], insbesondere dessen Mehrwertigkeit in Bezug auf die vollständige Green-Funktion G — eine Eigenschaft, die die Annahmen der selbstkonsistenten Störungstheorie untergräbt. Letztere ist von besonderer Bedeutung für grundlegende und weit verbreitete Vielteilchentechniken. Die Studie basiert auf der Matsubara-Erweiterung (ME) des Zero-Space-Time- (ZST-) Modells, einem Minimalmodell, das wesentliche Merkmale der Mehrwertigkeit erfasst und dennoch analytisch handhabbar bleibt.Im ersten Teil wird die irreführende Konvergenz des iterativen Schemas aus E. Kozik et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 156402 (2015)] in Bezug auf die verschiedenen Äste (branches) von Σ[G] und die Eigenwerte der generalisierten Ladungssuszeptibilität untersucht. Diese Ergebnisse deuten auf einen engen, jedoch nicht abschließenden Zusammenhang zwischen den beiden Größen hin.Anschließend präsentieren wir die Ergebnisse der Anwendung eines zusätzlichen Magnetfelds auf das ME-Modell. Bereits mit diesem einzelnen hinzugefügten Freiheitsgrad wird eine numerische Lösung praktisch unmöglich zu erhalten.Daraufhin werden die ME-Funktionale zur näherungsweisen Lösung von Gittermodellen eingesetzt: (i) mittels Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) für das Hubbard-Modell und (ii) für das Hatsugai–Kohmoto- (HK-) Modell, was die Untersuchung lokaler und nichtlokaler Korrelationen anhand von Spektralfunktionen ermöglicht. Diese Arbeit verbindet analytische Einsichten mit numerischen Simulationen, um aufzuzeigen, wie starke Wechselwirkungen selbstkonsistente iterative Methoden und Mott-ähnliche Übergänge in Gittermethoden für korrelierte Systeme beeinflussen. Besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Verständnis des Auftretens unphysikalischer Lösungen sowie der Regime, in denen Standardmethoden der Störungstheorie versagen.

This thesis investigates the pathological behavior of the self-energy functional Σ[G], particu- larly its multivaluedness in terms of the full Green’s function G, a property that undermines the assumptions of self-consistent perturbation theory. The latter is of particular importance for fundamental and widely applied text-book many-body techniques. The study is based on the Matsubara Extension (ME) of the Zero Space-Time (ZST) model, a minimal model that captures essential features of multivaluedness while remaining analytically tractable. In the first part, the misleading convergence of the iterative scheme, as introduced by Kozik et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 156402 (2015)], is investigated in relation to the different branches of Σ[G] and the eigenvalues of the generalized charge susceptibility. These findings indicate a close, but not conclusive connection between the two entities. Then, we present the results obtained when applying an additional magnetic field to the ME model. Already with this single added degree of freedom a numerical solution is practically im- possible to obtain. Afterwards, the ME functionals are employed for approximately solving lattice models: (i) using Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) for the Hubbard model and (ii) the Hatsugai-Kohmoto (HK) model, allowing for the study of local and nonlocal correlations through spectral functions. In this way, the thesis combines analytical insights with numerical simulations to reveal how strong interactions affect self-consistent iterative methods and Mott-like transitions for lattice methods of correlated systems. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the emergence of unphysical solutions and the regimes where standard perturbative methods fail.
