Simulation-based facade retrofit strategies with integrated BIPV : case study in Shanghai

Abstract

Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht simulationsbasierte Strategien zur energetischen Fassadensanie rung eines bestehenden Hochhausbürogebäudes in Shanghai. Ausgangspunkt sind hohe Kühl und Strombedarfe infolge veralteter Gebäudehüllen sowie des feucht-subtropischen Klimas. Ziel war die Reduktion des Nettoenergiebedarfs, die Verbesserung des thermischen Komforts und die gebäudeintegrierte Energiegewinnung. Hierzu wurde ein Multi-Objective-Optimization-Workflow (Grasshopper/EnergyPlus) entwickelt, der eine systematische Bewertung zahlreicher Fassadenvarianten ermöglicht. Betrachtet wurden Kombinationen aus Hochleistungsdämmung, optimierter Verglasung, feststehenden Verschattungssystemen sowie opaker BIPV. Das Basisszenario zeigte einen jährlichen Strombedarf von 115,0 kWh/m2. Das optimale Szenario reduzierte diesen Wert auf 64,6 kWh/m2 und erzielte durch Eigenproduktion den niedrigsten Nettoenergiebedarf mit einer Reduktion von 43,8% im Vergleich zum Basisszenario. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen, dass feststehende Verschattung in Kombination mit opaker BIPV in diesem Klimakontext die stärkste Reduktion von Kühllasten sowie eine signifikante Steigerung des Eigenstromanteils ermöglicht. Damit liefert die Arbeit ein reproduzierbares Verfahren zur simulationsgestützten Entwicklung energetisch vorteilhafter Fassadensanierungen im dichtbebauten Bestand.

This thesis investigates simulation-based façade retrofit strategies for an existing high-rise office building in Shanghai. The study addresses the high cooling demand and electrical consumption characteristic of ageing building envelopes in humid subtropical climates. The objective was to reduce net energy use, improve indoor thermal conditions and integrate building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) as an on-site energy source. A multi-objective optimisation workflow (Grasshopper/EnergyPlus) was developed to eval uate numerous facade configurations. The evaluated interventions combined high-performance insulation, improved glazing, fixed shading devices and opaque BIPV. The baseline scenario revealed an annual electricity demand of 115,0 kWh/m2. The optimal scenario, reduced the annual electricity demand to 64.6 kWh/m2 and achieved the lowest net energy use—a reduction of 43.8%—by maximizing on-site PV generation. The results demonstrate that combining fixed external shading with opaque BIPV achieves the most effective reduction of cooling demand and the highest share of self-generation under these climatic conditions. Overall, the proposed workflow provides a reproducible approach for simulation-supported façade retrofits of existing buildings in dense urban contexts and contributes to long-term energy and emission reduction strategies.
