Ein zweites Leben für den Bauernof : zur Revitalisierung eines Vierkanthofs in Hörsching, Oberösterreich

Abstract

Die Arbeit verortet sich konkret in der Marktgemeinde Hörsching im oberösterreichischen Zentralraum, etwa 12 km westlich von Linz und rund 15 km östlich von Wels. Die Lage im Spannungsfeld zwischen urbanem Wachstum und ländlicher Struktur birgt ein hohes Transformationspotenzial und macht den Ort zu einem exemplarischen Untersuchungsraum für aktuelle Entwicklungen im peri-urbanen Kontext. Vor dem Hintergrund sich rasch verändernder gesellschaftlicher Wohnformen und wirtschaftlicher Rahmenbedingungen befinden sich viele historische landwirtschaftliche Gebäude heute an einem Wendepunkt: Während ein Teil dieser Strukturen dem Verfall überlassen wird, erfahren andere durch neue Nutzungen eine zeitgemäße Weiterentwicklung. Das Projekt versteht sich als architektonische Reaktion auf diese Entwicklung und untersucht, wie bestehende Hofanlagen in zukunftsfähige Wohn- und Lebensräume transformiert werden können. Im konkreten Fall wird der Vierkanthof in eine Wohnanlage mit ergänzenden gemeinschaftlichen Funktionen überführt, die soziale Interaktion und Formen des gemeinschaftlichen Wohnens fördern. Der Entwurf zielt darauf ab, den Hof nicht nur funktional umzunutzen, sondern ihn als sozialen und räumlichen Mittelpunkt neu zu aktivieren. Zentraler Bestandteil des Projekts ist der architektonische Eingriff in die bestehende Struktur sowie die Neuinterpretation des Innenhofs. The project is located in the municipality of Hörsching in Upper Austria, approximately 12 km west of Linz and around 15 km east of Wels. Positioned within a dynamic peri-urban context between rural structure and urban expansion, the site offers significant potential for transformation and serves as a representative case for current spatial and societal developments.In response to rapidly changing living conditions and economic frameworks, many historic agricultural buildings are currently at a critical turning point: while some are left to decay, others are being reactivated through new uses. This thesis positions itself as an architectural response to this condition, exploring how existing farm structures can be transformed into contemporary living environments.In this case, the Vierkanthof is reinterpreted as a residential complex with additional communal functions that promote social interaction and shared living. The project aims not only to adapt the existing structure functionally but to redefine it as a social and spatial core.A key aspect of the design is the architectural intervention within the existing fabric and the reinterpretation of the courtyard. Through precise spatial transformations, the courtyard is reimagined as a central element of collective life. The intervention makes the transformation legible and establishes a “second life” of the farmstead, balancing tradition with contemporary spatial and social demands.
