In this paper the latest results of the collaborative HeAD (High performance electrical Austrian Drivetrain) project related to the thermal and efficiency behavior are presented. The consortium has developed a highly integrated electric axle drive with a high speed electric machine. Because of a high integration level combined with a compact size a holistic thermal consideration and investigation of thermal insights were defined by the key task thermal management. The HeAD e-axle design, simulation results and selected experimental results are presented. Stationary and transient temperature tests confirm the expected fundamental thermal behavior related to a high integration level and allow developing accurate thermal models in further research activities.
