Digital Storytelling in Dementia Care. An arts-based knowledge translation approach to improve practical knowledge sharing among informal caregivers

Abstract

Informelle Betreuungspersonen spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Demenzbegleitung, stehen jedoch häufig vor erheblichen organisatorischen und emotionalen Herausforderungen. Unterstützungsangebote, Selbsthilfegruppen und digitale Informationsressourcen können zwar wertvolle Orientierung bieten, sind jedoch insbesondere in ländlichen Regionen nicht immer leicht zugänglich oder nicht auf konkrete Betreuungssituationen zugeschnitten. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht diese Diplomarbeit, wie digitales Storytelling in einer Online-Umgebung gestaltet werden kann, um Erfahrungswissen aus dem Betreuungsalltag für andere Personen in ähnlichen Situationen zugänglich und nutzbar zu machen.Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines konzeptionellen Ansatzes sowie von Gestaltungsrichtlinien für eine digitale Plattform, auf der informelle Betreuungspersonen persönliche Erfahrungen erfassen, strukturieren, auffinden und gemeinschaftlich ergänzen können. Ein zentraler Ansatz liegt in der Verwendung interaktiver Video-Annotationen als niedrigschwellige Form der Beteiligung. Nutzer_innen müssen dadurch nicht immer eine vollständige eigene Geschichte von Grund auf erstellen, sondern können bestehende Inhalte auch durch kleinere Beiträge ergänzen, etwa durch erklärende Hinweise zur jeweiligen Situation oder durch ähnliche eigene Erfahrungen.Methodisch folgt die Arbeit einem Design-Science-Research-Ansatz und verbindet eine strukturierte Literaturrecherche, qualitative empirische Forschung sowie die iterative Gestaltung und Evaluation eines storytelling-basierten Plattformkonzepts.Betreuungspersonen benötigen Unterstützung, die über den reinen Zugang zu sachlichen Informationen hinausgeht. Erfahrungswissen ist in diesem Zusammenhang besonders wertvoll, weil es nicht nur bei praktischen Fragen im Betreuungsalltag weiterhilft, sondern auch emotionale Unterstützung bietet und ein Gefühl von Verständnis und Verbundenheit schaffen kann. Die Bereitschaft zur Beteiligung kann jedoch durch technische Hürden, Unsicherheiten beim Teilen persönlicher Erfahrungen und emotionale Verletzlichkeit eingeschränkt werden.Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass dieser Ansatz des digitalen Storytellings sowohl den Wissenstransfer als auch psychosoziale Unterstützung bieten kann, indem praktische Hilfestellung mit emotionaler Entlastung, Anerkennung und gegenseitigem Verständnis verbunden wird. Zudem zeigt die Arbeit, dass eine solche Plattform für Betreuungspersonen vor allem dann hilfreich und vertrauenswürdig sein kann, wenn Beteiligung möglichst niedrigschwellig gestaltet ist, Geschichten sinnvoll strukturiert auffindbar sind und sensible Inhalte angemessen moderiert werden.

Informal caregivers play a central role in dementia care, but they often face substantial organizational and emotional challenges. While support services, self-help groups, and digital information resources can provide valuable orientation, they are not always easily accessible, particularly in rural areas, and are not tailored to specific caregiving needs. This thesis explores how digital storytelling can be designed in an online environment to make \gls{experiential-knowledge} from dementia care accessible and useful for others facing similar challenges.The aim of this study is to develop a conceptual approach and design guidelines for a digital platform that enables informal caregivers to capture, structure, discover, and collaboratively enrich personal experiences. A central design contribution is the use of interactive video annotations as a form of incremental participation. This allows users to enrich existing content through smaller contributions, such as explanatory remarks about the specific situation or similar personal experiences, instead of creating a complete story from scratch.This work follows a Design Science Research approach and combines a structured literature review, qualitative empirical research, and the iterative design and evaluation of a storytelling-based platform concept. The findings show that caregivers require support that goes beyond access to factual information. In this context, experiential knowledge is valuable because it can provide practical guidance as well as emotional support and a sense of being understood.At the same time, participation can be limited by technical barriers, uncertainty about sharing personal experiences, and emotional vulnerability.These insights are used to develop personas, scenarios, use cases, and requirements. Based on these foundations, an interactive prototype is developed and refined through iterative design and evaluation.The results suggest that this digital storytelling approach could support both knowledge transfer and psychosocial support by combining practical guidance with emotional relief, recognition, mutual understanding, and social connectedness. This thesis contributes to the design of digital support systems by showing how knowledge sharing can be understood as a narrative and participatory process. Caregivers are not only recipients of information but also active contributors to a shared body of experiential knowledge. It further highlights that such a platform is more likely to be perceived as useful and trustworthy by caregivers when low-threshold participation is possible, stories can be found through meaningful contextual structuring, and sensitive content is moderated appropriately.
