This master’s thesis examines the strategic implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in logistics, focusing on efficiency, cost structure, and implications for medium-sized logistics companies. Against the background of increasing process complexity, rising cost pressure and ongoing digital transformation, AI is frequently described in the literature as a key driver of efficiency and competitiveness. At the same time, particularly in the context of medium-sized firms, the depth of implementation remains limited, primarily due to organizational, data-related and competence- and capacity-related conditions. The objective of this study is to analyze and contextualize the mechanisms through which AI affects logistics from a strategic perspective. The thesis deliberately refrains from quantitative performance measurement and company-specific case studies and instead follows a qualitative exploratory research design. The analysis is based on theoretical considerations and seven semi-structured expert interviews, which were evaluated using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. The findings indicate that AI is predominantly perceived as a supportive technology and that its actual use is largely confined to early stages of adoption. High strategic relevance is contrasted by low levels of productive implementation, particularly within core logistics processes. Expected efficiency effects mainly relate to improved decision support, increased transparency and reduced operational complexity, while direct and short-term cost reductions are rarely anticipated.Based on the synthesis of theoretical and empirical insights, key strategic decision dimensions and a heuristic orientation model are derived. The study concludes that, in the context of medium-sized logistics companies, AI should be understood less as a short-term efficiency lever and more as a long-term developmental resource, whose effectiveness depends fundamentally on organizational readiness, data maturity and strategic clarity.
