Environmental psychology provides critical insights into the impact of the built environment on organizational behavior and individual and group dynamics. This thesis addresses the challenge of identifying the key drivers that determine classroom seating position of a multicultural group of graduate students within a confined, semi-isolated, high-pressure academic setting. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combined systematic observations of consistent seating patterns with qualitative interviews. Within a framework which views universities as places for learning, socialization and psychological development, the research tested five hypotheses relating to environmental, cultural, personality, self-selection, and physiological factors influencing seating choice. The five hypotheses were accepted or rejected based on quantitative analysis and interviews with a representative sample of the cohort. Specifically, the personality hypothesis was accepted, confirming that leadership traits correlate with spatial dominance. The physiological hypothesis was accepted, as students consistently selected front positions to mitigate impairments. The environmental hypothesis was accepted with refinement. The cultural hypothesis was accepted in part, as nationality and gender influenced seating preference, while the educational background and the specific stream of study of the students did not. The self-selection hypothesis was rejected, as students prioritized ergonomic comfort over extrinsic academic stereotypes. Furthermore, the invade response analysis revealed a collective pattern of passive adaptation and conflict avoidance, demonstrating a risk of groupthink and the Abilene Paradox. The empirical findings also yield significant strategic implications for facility design, group dynamics, and decision-making processes. In particular, the thesis concludes that the rigid design of the lecture hall acted as a strategic liability, inhibiting active participation and collaboration. Consequently, organizational leaders and facility managers should move toward flexible, human-centric design and implement leadership interventions that institutionalize psychological safety and promote authentic dissent to enhance team effectiveness.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Faktoren, die die Sitzplatzwahl einer multikulturellen Gruppe von Masterstudierenden in einem räumlich begrenzten und leistungsorientierten akademischen Umfeld bestimmen. Mithilfe eines Mixed-Methods-Ansatzes, bestehend aus systematischen Beobachtungen und qualitativen Interviews, wurden fünf Hypothesen zu umweltbezogenen, kulturellen, persönlichkeitsbezogenen, selbstselektiven und physiologischen Einflussfaktoren geprüft.Die Ergebnisse bestätigen den Einfluss von Persönlichkeit, physiologischen Bedürfnissen sowie – mit Einschränkungen – von Umwelt- und kulturellen Faktoren auf die Sitzplatzwahl. Die Selbstselektionshypothese wurde hingegen verworfen, da ergonomischer Komfort gegenüber akademischen Stereotypen bevorzugt wurde. Zudem zeigte die Analyse ein Muster passiver Anpassung und Konfliktvermeidung, das auf Risiken wie Groupthink und das Abilene-Paradoxon hindeutet. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass die räumliche Gestaltung von Lehrumgebungen das Verhalten, die Interaktion und die Entscheidungsprozesse von Gruppen beeinflusst. Die Arbeit empfiehlt daher flexible, menschenzentrierte Raumkonzepte sowie Führungsmaßnahmen zur Förderung psychologischer Sicherheit und konstruktiven Widerspruchs, um Zusammenarbeit und Teamleistung zu verbessern.
