Each student compiled an in-depth chapter providing a state-of-the-art overview of recent
topics, drawing on major conferences in their respective fields. For Building Science, chapters are based on the BAUSIM proceedings (available via IBPSA); for Architecture, on the eCAADe conference (papers available in CuminCAD); and for Data Science, on the IEEE Xplore digital library. The papers were managed through OpenConf and automatically compiled into this volume using the inhouse developed ProceedingsTM/lite/ system.

dc.description.abstract
The students‘ conference “Algorithms in Planning Practice 2026” is the result of a seminar held at the Research Unit Digital Architecture and Planning at the TU Wien in the summer semester 2026. The contributions deal with current algorithms and data structures that are relevant for the planning of complex buildings such as hospitals, airports or train stations. The papers cover methods such as bin packing, genetic algorithms, kd-trees, and other partitioning of space, box counting, viewshed analysis and graph-based functional analysis.The conference proceedings provide an up-to-date overview of the current state of research and show examples of how algorithmic thinking can solve planning-relevant problems and how it is expanding the architectural and functional design process.
