Post-Schuhstadt Strategie zur Transformation eines Kulturdenkmals

Abstract

Der strukturelle Wandel europäischer Industriestädte infolge von Deindustrialisierung und ökonomischer Neuorientierung rückt den Umgang mit aufgegebenen Produktionsstätten zunehmend in den Fokus von Stadtentwicklung, Denkmalpflege und Kultur. Vor allem innerstädtisch gelegene Industrieareale erfordern dabei eine differenzierte Bewertung, die Fragen des Erhalts, der Umnutzung und ihrer städtebaulichen Einbindung gleichermaßen berücksichtigt, bevor Abbrüche und Umbauten in Betracht gezogen werden.Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich diese Arbeit dem denkmalpflegerischen und erinnerungskulturellen Umgang mit ehemaligen Schuhfabriken in Pirmasens. Als einst bedeutendes Zentrum der Schuhproduktion erlebte die Stadt im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eine intensive industrielle Prägung, die sowohl die urbane Struktur als auch das gesellschaftliche Gefüge nachhaltig formte. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die theoretischen und methodischen Grundlagen der zeitgenössischen Denkmalpflege. Ergänzend werden Praktiken der Erinnerungskultur analysiert und in Bezug auf die ehemalige Schuhindustrie als identitätsstiftendes Element der Stadt eingeordnet. Darauf aufbauend wird die historische Entwicklung Pirmasens’ vom Garnisonsstandort zur Schuhstadt nachgezeichnet. Anhand ausgewählter Fabrikgebäude werden architektonische und historische Gegebenheiten untersucht sowie standortspezifische Einflussfaktoren und relevante Akteurskonstellationen für zukünftige Transformationsprozesse identifiziert.Im Zentrum steht die Entwicklung einer Transformationsstrategie am Beispiel der ehemaligen Ludwig-Kopp-Schuhfabrik. Ziel ist es, den Erhalt der historischen Bausubstanz mit einer niederschwelligen kulturellen Nachnutzung zu verbinden und dabei den Genius Loci zu bewahren. Die Arbeit bewegt sich im Spannungsfeld von Industriegeschichte, Authentizität, Leerstand und Stadtentwicklung und zeigt mögliche Wege für einen sensiblen und zukunftsorientierten Umgang mit industriellem Erbe auf.

The structural transformation of European industrial cities as a result of deindustrialization and economic reorientation has increasingly brought the handling of abandoned production sites into the focus of urban development, heritage conservation, and cultural discourse. Inner-city industrial sites in particular require a differentiated assessment that takes equal account of issues of preservation, adaptive reuse, and urban integration before demolition or conversion measures are considered.This thesis examines approaches to heritage conservation and cultural memory in relation to former shoe factories in Pirmasens. As a once important center of shoe production, the city experienced intense industrial development in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which had a lasting impact on both its urban structure and its social fabric. Furthermore this thesis addresses the theoretical and methodological foundations of contemporary heritage conservation. In addition, practices of cultural memory are analyzed and situated in relation to the former shoe industry as an identity-forming element of the city. Building on this, the historical development of Pirmasens from a garrison town to the shoe city is traced. Selected factory buildings are examined with regard to their architectural and historical characteristics, while site-specific influencing factors and relevant constellations of stakeholders for future transformation processes are identified.The main focus is the development of a transformation strategy using the former Ludwig Kopp Shoe Factory as a case study. The aim is to combine the preservation of the historic building fabric with a low-threshold cultural reuse while maintaining the genius loci of the site. The thesis operates at the intersection of industrial history, authenticity, vacancy, and urban development, and demonstrates possible approaches for a sensitive and future-oriented handling of industrial heritage.
