Emotionen als Wert der Denkmalpflege: Ein Konzept zur kulturellen Umnutzung der St. Josef Kirche in Eitorf

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Rolle emotionaler Wertzuschreibungen im Umgang mit Kirchendenkmalen. Ausgangspunkt ist die zunehmende Aufgabe liturgisch genutzter Kirchengebäude in Deutschland und Osterreich. Profanierung, Verkauf, Umnutzung oder Abriss betreffen dabei nicht nur die bauliche Substanz, sondern auch Erinnerungen, soziale Bindungen und lokale Identitäten. Am Beispiel der 1970 nach Plänen von Hans Lob errichteten und 2021 profanierten St. Josef Kirche in Eitorf wird untersucht, welche Bedeutungen Menschen mit einem Bezug zur Kirche dem Gebäude zuschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Erinnerungen an den Ort, Wahrnehmungen der räumlichen Atmosphäre, Erfahrungen des Schließungs- und Profanierungsprozesses sowie Vorstellungen einer zukünftigen Nutzung. Die Arbeit verbindet eine theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit Emotion, Denkmalwert und Sakralraumtransformation mit einer qualitativen empirischen Untersuchung. Die Ergebnisse werden in ein Konzept zur kulturellen Umnutzung der ehemaligen Kirche übertragen. Damit zeigt die Arbeit exemplarisch, wie emotionale Wertzuschreibungen in Bewertungs- und Umnutzungsprozessen ehemals sakral genutzter Räume sichtbar gemacht und planerisch berücksichtigt werden können.

This study examines the role of emotional value attributions in the treatment of church monuments. The starting point is the increasing abandonment of church buildings used for liturgical purposes in Germany and Austria. Secularization, sale, repurposing, or demolition affect not only the physical structure but also memories, social ties, and local identities. Using the example of St. Josef Church in Eitorf - built in 1970 according to plans by Hans Lob and deconsecrated in 2021 - this study examines the meanings that people with a connection to the church ascribe to the building. The focus is on memories of the place, perceptions of the spatial atmosphere, experiences of the closure and deconsecration process, and ideas about future use. The study combines a theoretical examination of emotion, heritage value, and the transformation of sacred spaces with a qualitative empirical investigation. The findings are translated into a concept for the cultural repurposing of the former church. In doing so, the study exemplifies how emotional value attributions can be made visible and incorporated into planning processes during the evaluation and repurposing of formerly sacred spaces.
