This contribution documents a presentation and site visit delivered as part of a three-day EULiST staff exchange, during which sustainability experts from Politecnico di Milano — Eleonora Perotto and Chiara Minerva — visited TU Wien in Vienna. The presentation reported on ongoing work at TU Wien on assessing the environmental impacts of university procurement. The methodological approach combines environmentally extended input-output (EEIO) analysis, which enables spend-based screening of the full procurement portfolio, with process-based life cycle assessment (LCA) for procurement categories requiring higher resolution. A central topic was the automation of this workflow: the use of large language models (LLMs) to classify and map heterogeneous procurement line items to LCA and EEIO datasets, thereby making Scope 3 screening scalable and reproducible for large organisations. The presentation also covered project status, data sources and data preparation, the hybrid modelling logic, and the remaining practical challenges.
A subsequent guided tour introduced the TU Wien Transformer, a vacant property on Rennweg repurposed as a hands-on, co-creation science outreach space, whose formats enable TU Wien staff and students to deliver hands-on science education on sustainability topics together with children and young people.
