This study examines passenger requirements and behaviour in metro systems, with a particular focus on automation and real-time information. It examines passenger concerns regarding automated metros and identifies communication strategies to address these concerns. The research also analyses waiting preferences on the platform and the extent to which real-time information supports more balanced passenger distribution. Furthermore, it examines perceptions of safety within the system and seating and standing preferences inside the vehi-
cle. A structured passenger survey (n = 899) conducted across Europe forms the primary basis of the analysis. Interviews with representatives from railway operators and researchers were also conducted to support and contextualize the survey findings. The results indicate a high demand for clear, dynamic, and context-sensitive real-time passenger information, particularly regarding crowding levels and service disruptions. While automation is widely accepted, concerns remain
about safety and the lack of human presence in emergencies. Many respondents expressed a willingness to adapt their behaviour on the platform if clearer guidance or real-time updates were provided. In terms of seating and standing preferences inside the vehicle, passengers prefer a design that allows easy boarding and alighting, while ensuring maximum personal space.
