Abstract

Das Thema dieser Masterarbeit behandelt den Entwurf eines urbanen Aktivators für das historische Zentrum von Sofia. Das Interesse für diesen bestimmten Ort wurde schon in meiner Kindheit geweckt, als ich im Jahr 1999 die erfolglose Sprengung des Mausoleums von Georgi Dimitrov im Fernsehen mitverfolgte. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit zwei Hauptthemen, die vom Kontext untrennbar sind- Destruktion und Überlagerung. In den letzten 200 Jahren war dieser Ort stets ein Symbol für den politischen Status Quo, welcher bei jedem Regimewechsel zerstört wurde, um Platz für ein neues Symbol zu schaffen. Die letzte Zerstörung fand genau vor 20 Jahren statt. Seitdem wurde nichts Neues gebaut und der Ort als bedeutungslose Lücke im städtischen Gefüge der Stadt zurückgelassen. Das Areal wurde im Laufe der langen Geschichte der Stadt mehrmals vollständig umstrukturiert- jedes Mal ohne Rücksicht oder sogar mit Absicht gegen die bestehende Struktur. Dies führte zur gleichzeitigen Existenz mehrerer inkohärenter und widersprüchlicher Systeme. Der Entwurf versucht, die Spannung zwischen diesen Systemen durch ihre Überlagerung in einem einzigen Gebäude aufzunehmen.

The topic of this master thesis is the design of an urban activator for the historical center of Sofia. The interest to this particular site has been sparkled early in my childhood, ever since I watched the unsuccessful building implosion of the Mausoleum of Georgi Dimitrov back in 1999. There are two main themes that are inseparable from the context of the site- destruction and superimposition. In the past 200 years the site has always housed a symbol of the political status quo, which was subsequently destroyed with every regime change to make place for a new symbol. The last destruction took place exactly 20 years ago, but since then nothing new has been built and the site has been left as a meaningless void in the urban fabric of the city. The surrounding area has been completely reorganized a number of times throughout the long history of the city, and every time without regard, or even intentionally against, the existing structure. This leads to the simultaneous existence of multiple incoherent or even juxtaposing systems. The design is intended to absorb the tension between those systems through their superimposition in one single building.
