dc.description.abstract

This thesis deals with the quality of public green spaces in the City of Vienna. It focuses on the densely populated inner city areas. In addition to illustration and assessment of the current green space situation, potential measures and instruments for the provision of green space are shown. For this purpose, by addressing existing literature, types, functions, and different user Groups of green areas are demonstrated. Derived from that, requirements regarding accessibility, design and settings of green spaces are worked out. The reference to practical planning is made by describing the green space development and the strategies of the City of Vienna. The historical processes behind today's green space situation are illuminated and future challenges and instruments of the green space Planning are presented. The analysis part deals with the inner city areas of Vienna. Using the identified criteria, the quality characteristics of each green area are determined, based on a data entry form and interpreted at the district level. It is shown that, in addition to the multi-functionality as the main feature, the quality of green space can be composed of many factors inside and outside the sites and can only be increased by active participation and interaction from all those involved in planning.
