dc.description.abstract

Ionised atoms, clusters and molecules are widely used to modify the surface of a variety of materials. To improve the methods used, a better understanding of the fundamental processes is needed. We perform irradiation of Au nano-structures with slow highly charged ions (Xe40+) and irradiation of the insulator CaF2 with ions from a cluster-ion source (Au+, Au2+, Au3+ and Si++). Impacts of slow highly charged ions onto a target surface can lead to a change of the materials structure, such as e.g. phase transitions and nano-structures. Responsible for this transformation is the excitation of electrons of the target material due to the neutralization of the ion in the area of the ion impact and subsequent lattice heating mediated by electron-phonon coupling. So far, potential energy effects have not been observed on metallic target materials. This is due to the high electronic conductivity of conductors, which results in a fast dissipation of the electrical excitations induced by the potential energy of the impinging slow highly charged ion (HCI). For a better understanding of the interaction of slow highly charged ions with conductors, single metallic nano-islands were used. It was investigated if a minimum of the lateral size of those structures exists, where beneath it, the electronic excitation cannot dissipate fast enough. In case of an existing threshold, nano-structuring due to potential energy effects can be expected. I show that a change of the Au nano-islands is in fact induced by irradiation with HCIs. Irradiation of a target using cluster-ions can lead to the creation of nano-hillocks and subsequently a change of the surface structure closely resembling previous findings with slow HCIs. Different sizes and charge states of cluster-ions are used in the irradiation process to determine a correlation between size of the nano-structures and properties of the impinging projectile. I show that nano-structuring is achieved with irradiation of CaF2 by cluster-ions and compare possible mechanisms to models for HCI induced surface hillocks.
