Purpose The number of construction companies, planner and clients using Building Information Modeling in Austria is constantly increasing. Accordingly, the industrys demand for professionals, who have experience working with this technology and techniques grows constantly. In response to supply this growing demand for specialists, it is necessary for universities and advanced technical colleges teaching in the building sector that they introduce Building Information Modeling into their teaching programmes. This diploma thesis analyses different methodologies how and to what extend Building Information Modeling can be integrated into civil engineering programmes and defines main teaching and learning objectives. Based on the analysis the key aspects that need to be considered before implementation, can be identified. This diploma thesis creates recommendations on how to integrate Building Information Modeling into the civil engineering curriculum at the Technical University of Vienna. In this context, the content of different lectures including Building Information Modeling are displayed and their learning outcomes are defined. Methodology The foundation of this diploma thesis is a systematic and comprehensive literature research. The theoretical basics of Building Information Modeling are explained, in addition, implementation strategies and educational methods of different international universities are described and analysed. Based on this research important information and relevant approaches are identified that address the key issues of this diploma thesis. Findings Based on a comprehensive literature research five key components can be identified that need to be considered while restructuring a curriculum. Subsequently, a concept is presented that includes a recommendation on how Building Information Modeling can be implemented in the civil engineering curriculum at the Technical University of Vienna. This concept includes an implementation strategy and describes the learning outcomes of the different courses. Independent courses are developed with an exclusive focus on Building Information Modeling. In addition, the course content of some existing modules is modified to integrate particular aspects of Building Information Modeling that are related to the subject itself. The recommended modifications in the curriculum mainly concern courses in the masters programme of civil engineering. Research implications Since the use of Building Information Modeling in the construction industry has a strong impact on architecture, it is necessary to integrate this method into architectural teaching programmes at universities. The recommendations presented in this diploma thesis are limited to the implementation of Building Information Modeling across the curriculum of civil engineering programmes.
