When the refugee movements of the last few years reached Austria, the media, politicians and society began debating the subject of the refugees flight and how to deal with refugees. Although the number of refugees has begun declining since 2016, the complex issue defined as: ¿Refugee movements and their impact on the host countries" is still ever-present in the media. Several hypotheses have been disseminated by television and the print media, including the theory that asylum seekers are to be distributed to rural communities for better integration. This raises the question, in which way the rural communities and regions will benefit through the accommodation and care of asylum seekers. This paper investigates, through the conducting of interviews, what economic potential can result from the refugee influx in the rural communities and regions and what social processes are to be expected within the communities. It is shown by the examples of the local communities Perchtoldsdorf, Machegg, Neudörfl and Wolfau, that accommodating and caring for asylum seekers provides only temporary economic benefits for most communities and regions. The majority of the asylum seekers will finally settle in urban areas after having received asylum. Furthermore the number of asylum seekers is decreasing and thus also the income of the municipalities. Social ties already created and experience gained, will however, last, which means that the social repercussions have a slightly greater bearing than the economic ones.
