The historic city center of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia is renowned for its traditional residential architecture, three-to-six-story coral stone buildings. These buildings are now at risk, and thus far, only a small number of projects have focused on comprehensive building documentation including in-depth analysis of the traditional building stock, and successful examples of rehabilitation and adaptive reuse are rare. Within the frame of an initiative of the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education, the Department of Architecture of the College of Environmental Design at the King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah and the municipality of Jeddah established a joint project with the Department of History of Architecture and Building Archaeology of the Vienna University of Technology in 2008, which received final official approval in 2011. A four-week intensive student workshop held in October 2011 at the site in Jeddah resulted in a brief analysis of the urban fabric of this major historic Hedjaz town, a contour-accurate building survey of the Al Nawar house and the updating of the 1980 building survey of Noor Wali house. Both buildings are examples of typical residential buildings of Al Balad. For the Al Nawar house, a detailed examination of the historic architecture and existing structure of the building using different survey methods ranging from classical hand measurements through tachymetry, photogrammetry and high-tech 3D laser scanning was carried out.
