Abstract: We introduce a new preconditioning techniquefor the high-frequency Helmholtz equation basedon a checkerboard domain decomposition. Thenovelty of the new technique is that it can beapplied in parallel and is independent of thediscretization. In particular, the preconditionercan be applied inO(N/p)complexity whereNis the number of degrees of freedom andp=O(N1/d)is the number of processors. We con-sider several numerical examples involving con-stant and non-constant wave speeds. In all ex-amples, using a preconditioned GMRES method,the preconditioner results in a logarithmic growthof the number of iterations with respect to thefrequencyω.
