Connecting Canal de Chalco : a strategic approach to upgrade an informal settlement in Mexico City

Abstract

Diese Arbeit setzt sich zum einen mit der theoretischen Aufarbeitung der Stadtentwicklung und der Entstehung von informellen Siedlungen in Mexico Stadt auseinander, zum anderen wird für die Siedlung Colonia Chinampas de Santa Maria Tomatlán am Canal de Chalco ein strategisches Konzept entwickelt, welches zur Verbesserung bestehender Strukturen herangezogen werden kann. Über vier verschiedene "Toolboxes" werden Bereiche angesprochen, welche die Siedlung in ihre Umgebung integrieren. Eine grundlegende Rolle nimmt die Schaffung öffentlicher Plätze und Naherholungsräume sowie die Implementierung einer sozialen Infrastruktur in das bestehende Gefüge ein. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf partizipative Prozesse gelegt, die zur Akzeptanz neuer Projekte und deren nachhaltige Entwicklung beitragen.

This thesis endeavors to examine the urban development and the consequential growth of informal settlements in Mexico City as well as to generate a strategic concept to improve living conditions in the Colonia Chinampas de Santa Maria Tomatlán on the Canal de Chalco. Four toolboxes have been created in a specific attempt to integrate the informal settlement within the surrounding built-up area. The establishment of public spaces, local recreation areas and the implementation of a social infrastructure within the existing residential structure is of fundamental importance. A special focus has been placed on participation processes because public acceptance of such new projects is essential for the sustainable development thereof.
