Abstract

Learning from Prata Sannita ist eine Reflexion zum Million Donkey Hotel von feld72, eine Art retro-aktives Manifest für einen Prozess und ein Projekt. An der Schnittstelle von Urbanismus, Architektur, Kunst und sozialem Projekt angesiedelt, wirft das Million Donkey Hotel Fragen auf zu Territorium und Identität, Peripherie und Zentrum, Schrumpfung und Transformation, und zeigt eine Möglichkeit, aus einer Krisensituation eine Chance zu entwickeln. Kann man ein Hotel in 24 Tagen bauen? Der Leerstand eines schrumpfenden Dorfes im Süden Italiens mit kaum mehr als 1500 Einwohnern wurde als Potential gesehen: die vielen unterschiedlichen leeren Räume im alten Dorf wurden als mögliche Zimmer eines diffusen Hotels wahrgenommen. Innerhalb eines Monats, mit der Hilfe von mehr als 40 Freiwilligen aus dem Dorf und einem Materialbudget von 10.000 Euro wurden -Schlafzimmer- und ein spezielles Badezimmer entwickelt und gebaut. In der Nebensaison können diese von den Pratesi als Erweiterung des öffentlichen Raumes genutzt werden. Das Million Donkey Hotel wird nun von einem Verein der -local heroes- weitergeführt - aus einem situationistischen Zugang hat sich ein nachhaltiges Projekt mit Einbezugnahme der lokalen Ressourcen und Ökonomie entwickelt.

Learning from Prata Sannita is a reflection on the Million Donkey Hotel by feld72, a retro-active manifesto for a process and a project. At the intersection of urbanism, architecture, art und social practice, the Million Donkey Hotel raises questions about territory and identity, periphery and centers, shrinking and transformation, and shows the potential for a future development of a former critical situation. Can you build a hotel in 24 days? How can we boost the micro-economy of a remote region that is seeing a decline in its population? When we were first invited to Prata Sannita, a village in the Matese regional park close to Naples, we asked ourselves: can´t we perceive this shrinking town, home to 1500 people, as a large, scattered hotel that still has rooms available: the abandoned spaces? In just one month we were able to recruit up to 40 volunteers to work with us on site. Using very straightforward methods, we excavated spaces from the abandoned architecture of the medieval village, reactivating them as -hotel rooms- and as a special -bathroom-, which can be used by the Pratesi as an extension of the public space during the -off-season-. -The Million Donkey Hotel- in Prata Sannita shows how a situationist-type-project can bring life back to an entire village - even in the long run.
