dc.description.abstract
Global trend such as increasing individualization of products, global competition and much faster developing markets demand a new thinking in structuring and organizing manufacturing enterprises. It is required to optimize production facilities steadily and to keep them flexible and efficient to respond on new upcoming challenges. Only in this way competitive manufacturing within high-wage countries is secured in long-term time horizon. The aim of the thesis is the design of a future sustainable production structure consisting of multiple locations. In this context, a systematic design procedure is developed and subsequently validated by its application. By applying the method solutions with respect to the assignment problem of the products and competences to the respective sites will be created. Furthermore, an optimal design of the necessary plant capacity of the sites takes place. The developed method for the production structure planning is divided into three essential chapters, the analysis and documentation of the planning objects, the conception of alternative structural variants and the evaluation and selection of the final production structure. Within the analysis and documentation a model of the existing structure is created, furthermore future trends will be analyzed and requirements in regard to the structure will be defined from a future perspective. Using this information, actions for the future sustainable production structure are derived. In the concept phase production structures with alternative product and competence allocations to the specific production locations are created. A subsequent evaluation of the structural variants according to the defined objective criteria results in the selection of the optimal future production structure. The validation of the model is carried out at a medium-sized industrial company with three production facilities within the Federal Republic of Germany.
