dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The aim of this work is to research the use of refined glycerol as a feedstock for Fluid Catalytic Cracking. Therefore, highly pure glycerol (99,5w%) is mixed with vacuum gas oil at several ratios and used as feedstock in a fluid catalytic cracking pilot plant. The pilot plant is situated at the Vienna University of Technology. The resulting products are analyzed and important benchmark parameters are experimentally determined. What we can see in this experiment is, that with higher glycerol concentrations in the feed, the water content of the product is linear ascending up to 60w%. In addition to this the carbon oxide content ascends steeply while the coke production stays almost at the same level. The content of the valuable products (gas and gasoline) is decreasing badly, with the increase of the glycerol content in the feed. Furthermore, the investigation of the glycerol conversions shows, that unrelated to the glycerol content in the feed, about 60w% of the glycerol are converted to water. Additional to that, it is clearly evident that a large amount of the glycerol is converted to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and coke. Only a small part of the glycerol is converted to gas or gasoline. The purification of technical glycerol was very successful. With a two step batch distillation (atmospherical and vacuum) it was possible to purify the glycerol up to 99,6w%. Another benefit was, that all the salt residues were removed without thermal degradation of the glycerol.
