dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PZT), is one of the most important materials in state-of-the-art applications. All these applications have in common that degradation and fatigue are serious problems. Among others, high leakage currents and the breakdown of resistivity may limit the lifetime of devices. Despite high importance, defect chemistry, its variation upon electrical field load and degradation behaviour are still not fully understood. Two main reasons may be associated with resistance degradation, on the one hand defect migration and on the other hand the formation of differently shaped precipitates from the electrodes on or in PZT material. In this thesis several experiments will be shown, which will demonstrate the difficult nature of the degradation phenomenon in donor doped PZT with Cu inner electrodes. Special attention will be payed to the detection of conductive paths in PZT materials using the conductive atomic force microscope (c-AFM).
