Karl Schwaiger verwiesen.

This master thesis is being written as part of the application oriented research project SandTES (Thermal - Energy - Storage) at the Institute for Energy Systems and Thermody-namics. The general aim is to look into the correlation between the sand level inside a fluid bed heat exchanger and its air supplying nozzles. The flow from the feed pipe through the nozzle to the sand bed boundary is of particular interest here. It is to be determined if and to what extent the required effects occur and what accessory phenomena might arise. Special attention is given to the relevancy of a turbulent upstream flow for the formation of a turbulent free jet. On doing so, analytical calculations are made according to established technical literature as well as computer based numerical flow simulations. These simulations can be divided into four 2D-axisymmetric and one 3D-analysis. The 2D version allows a close examination of the forming of a free jet in a transient flow regime with variable mass flow. The 3D variant should mirror the stationary operating performance. Furthermore the usage of all needed simulation software will be documented theoretically and practically. This way a so called -best-practice--model is generated as an example for future projects in this field. Subsequently a test facility will be constructed in cooperation with the project team in order to verify the results of both calculations and simulations. All effects occurring within the bubbling bed such as mixing, retention time, heat exchange etc. are not part of this thesis. Regarding these topics the work of my supervisor, Dipl.-Ing. Karl Schwaiger is highly recommended.
