Sense-Making Stragegien in Matrix- und Graphvisualisierungen

Abstract

Die visuelle Aufbereitung von Informationen ist im Bereich der Informatik eine von vielen wichtigen Thematiken. Betrachtet man die vorhandene Literatur so kann man erkennen, dass es hierzu unzählige Arbeiten gibt. Diese Diplomarbeit spezialisiert sich in dieser Hinsicht auf zwei Visualisierungsarten: die erweiterte Adjazenzmatrix und das Node-Link-Diagramm. Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird auf die Vorund Nachteile der jeweiligen Visualisierungen bei gewissen Aufgabenstellungen näher eingegangen. Zusätzlich wurde versucht diverse sense-making Strategien der AnwenderInnen zu identifizieren. Als Grundlage hierfür diente eine Studie der Technischen Universität Wien und der Middlesex University in England, die die Interaktion mit dem System sowie die Sense-Making-Strategien, die die BenutzerInnen anwendeten, untersuchte. Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird diese Studie beschrieben und diesbezüglich auch auf die Verwendung beider verwendeter visueller Repräsentationen näher eingegangen. Die Auswertung erfolgte durch die Verwendung der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse, wobei die Analyseschritte mittels Kategoriensystem erfolgten. Bei den Ergebnissen wurden erst die Teilnehmer charakterisiert und in weiterer Folge die einzelnen Kategorien ausgewertet. Hierbei konnte herausgefunden werden, dass beide Darstellungen ihre Vorund Nachteile haben und deren jeweilige Anwendung von der Art der Problemstellung abhängt. Außerdem wurden 10 Sense-Making-Strategien identifiziert.

The visual preparation of information is one of many important topics in the field of computer science. If the existing literature is examined, it could be realized that there are reams of papers based at this topic. In this regard this diploma thesis spezialises in two types of visualisation: the advanced adjacency matrix and the node-link-graph. In the context of this thesis, the advantages and disadvantages of the respective visualisations for certain tasks are discussed in more detail. In addition it has been tried to identify various sense-making strategies of the users. The basis for this was a study from the Vienna University of Technology and the Middlesex University in England, which tested the interaction with the system and the sense-making strategies used by the users. In the context of the work, this study is described and in this regard, the use of both visual representations is discussed in more detail. The evaluation was carried out by using the qualitative content analysis, whereby the analysis steps where carried out by a set of categories. In the results, the participants were first charactersised and subsequently the individual categories were evaluated. In this connection it could bei detected that both representations have their advantages and disadvantages and that their respective practice depends on the nature of the problem. In addition, 10 sense-making-strategies were identified.
