dc.description.abstract
When installing the technologies for the utilization of solar energy to the usable roof area of residential buildings, the questions arise: Is it economically better to use only solar thermal collectors or photovoltaic systems (PV)? Or are both in combination optimal - to which extent each of these options in each case? On which parameters are the results depending? In this work a computational approach for the optimal economic use of PV and solar thermal collectors on the roof-top surfaces is developed. By this approach the surface shares of the solar heat collector system and PV system on the roof-top area are determined to the maximum profit point (profit is equal to economic returns minus the investment and operating costs under the consideration of funding). The results are also compared with those of the existing model INVERT\EE-Lab, where previously no PV system is taken into account, to see the difference when the PV is modeled explicitly at the same time with solar thermal systems. The comparison and the outcomes/findings of the models result from the example of the residential buildings in Switzerland. Under the analyzed economic base conditions it is most economical to equip all of the usable roof area with the PV system and with a little or no share with the solar thermal system. For residential buildings with a heat pump or a wood heater, as well as single family houses with oil heating, it is the most economical way to only install the PV system. For multi-family houses with oil heating it is the most economical way to install a small amount (about 15%) of the usable roof area with a solar thermal system next to the PV system. In residential buildings with gas heating it is also the most economical way to install a small share (about 25%) with solar thermal systems and the remaining share of the usable roof area with PV. Solar thermal systems are most economical for buildings with an electric heater. For buildings with large specific thermal heat demand (based on the usable roof area) the solar thermal system is even better than the PV system. The attractiveness of solar thermal systems always increases with decreasing differences in prices of the energy carrier of the installed heater compared to the electricity price. Thus, the attractiveness of solar thermal systems is the highest for electrical heaters. The comparison with the model Invert\EE-Lab shows a different selection of the economically optimal use of solar thermal energy, which is also discussed in this theses. Improving the efficiency of the heater, as well as the renovation of the building makes the solar thermal system less attractive compared to the PV system. The significant cost reductions of the solar thermal systems (at constant cost of PV) do not result in significantly economical attractiveness over PV. An increase in the interest rate or feed-in tariff favors the PV system.
