Abstract:
The cross-cultural exchange of goods and knowledge is a constituting element of modern society. Today's architectural production is perceived to be part of this cosmopolitan society, where increasing exchange is taking place in a wide range of fields. Amongst these, regulations and technology play a crucial role due to their significant and long-term implications for building culture. However, current interaction has been restricted to within the respective disciplines - a problematic fact, as the respective cultural backgrounds differ fundamentally but remain neglected. The impact can currently for example be seen in Europe, where over-regulation is taking palce due to overlapping competences in professional regulation. Furthermore, the approach to building technology as shown, is also not only merely a technical matter, but highly dependent on historic development and sociocultural preferences. This thesis demonstrates the need for a deeper cross-cultural understanding, surpassing purely technocratic considerations in the cultural exchange process to avoid long-term conflicts through superimposition of exisiting and new frameworks.
