dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The participation in traditional democratic processes, e.g. in elections, is declining. In particular the way young people understand and engage in politics has undergone a change. This thesis will evaluate how the incorporation of modern social media platforms can increase the motivation of young people to become part of the democratic process and increase the election turnout. This thesis evaluates how a participation-platform can be embedded into the social network Facebook. Thereby various aspects of the network can be used from inside the political platform. This also leads to privacy issues as the account is used by the social network and the participation-platform. An important focus of this thesis is the question on the applicability of this form of integration. Firstly this thesis deals with the basic theoretical principles of social networks and of e-participation and examples of both. Additionally the possible implementation of three scenarios is discussed. Based on these findings, a draft prototype was implemented. This prototype is a simple application for e-participation and deeply integrated into the social network Facebook. Finally the prototype is evaluated and discussed from different perspectives.
