dc.description.abstract
In storage systems, taking inventories has to be done regularly in order to update them. Taking a manual inventory of books in a library can be time-consuming and monotonous. This thesis presents an image-based, automated algorithm which carries out an optical inventory. To this end, the relevant images are segmented using morphological operations and Maximally Stable Extremal Regions. The resulting image segments containing the interesting labels of the books are then committed to a text recognition algorithm. This text recognition algorithm not only contains a universal label recognition procedure but it is also able to treat special cases, for example, labels where single letters are missing or only parts of the label are available. In addition, position information of the labels within the shelf units is extracted from the data. Together with the library's database, error lists can be generated in table form and the errors can be displayed graphically within the shelf units. The algorithm was successfully tested at the library of the Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) at TU Wien.
