Try again. Fail again. Fail better. : Initiierung, Leitung und Dokumentation eines prozessorientierten Zwischennutzungsprojekts in einem (halb-) leerstehenden Wiener Zinshaus vor der Sockelsanierung 2012 - 2013

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit umfasst die Dokumentation und theoretische Reflexion des prozessorientierten Zwischennutzungsprojekts 111. Dieses Projekt wurde von mir, Lukas Boeckle, initiiert, geleitet und durchgefuehrt. Das genutzte Objekt befindet sich in der Schoenbrunner Strasse 111 im 5. Wiener Gemeindebezirk und wurde vor der geplanten Sockelsanierung zwischen August 2012 bis Ende Oktober 2013 bespielt. Der erste Teil meiner Arbeit setzt sich mit dem theoretischen Diskurs zur Thematik der Zwischennutzung auseinander. Ganz im Sinne einer Action-Research-Methode, habe ich mir in dieser Zeit theoretisches und praktisches Wissen zur Thematik der Zwischennutzung leerstehender staedtischer Raeume, den Problemstellungen entsprechend angeeignet. Dabei war mir wichtig in meiner Arbeit einen starken Bezug zwischen Theorie und Praxis zu erhalten. Diese prozessorientierte Vorgehensweise bildete die Moeglichkeit die temporaere Zwischennutzung den Anspruechen der Akteure anzupassen. Konstruktives Scheitern war Teil eines individuellen und kommunalen Lernprozesses. Diese Projektorganisation bot Raum und Zeit fuer das Bilden einer Gemeinschaft und schuf somit den Naehrboden fuer zwischenmenschliche, soziale und informelle Interaktionen. Meine theoretische Untersuchung setzt sich mit der Entwicklung von temporaeren Nutzungen seit der Entstehung im Rahmen der Situationistischen Internationalen bis zur Gegenwart auseinander. Dabei gehe ich nicht nur auf vergangene Konzeptutopien ein, sondern auch auf aktuellere Tendenzen. Es werden Strategien der Selbstorganisation und Partizipation, Schwierigkeiten und Potentiale der Zwischennutzung, wie auch rechtliche Belange eroertert und in Bezug zur Stadt Wien gesetzt. Im Hauptteil meiner Diplomarbeit wird das von mir initiierte Zwischennutzungsprojekt in der Schoenbrunner Strasse 111 dokumentiert, sowohl hinsichtlich der moeglichen bzw. realisierten Nutzungsvielfalt, als auch in Bezug auf meine eigene Rolle in der Prozessleitung und Projekterhaltung. Dabei zeige ich nicht nur die unterschiedlichen Veranstaltungen und Projektphasen auf, sondern erklaere auch meine operativen Taetigkeiten, unterstuetzenden Planungen und verweise auf diverse Schwierigkeiten samt Loesungsversuchen. Improvisation war fuer mich eine wichtige Methode im Umgang mit den aufgetretenen Unordnungen bzw. Unvorhersehbarkeiten, mit denen man konfrontiert wird. Beobachten und Agieren, reflexives Handeln innerhalb des Vorgefundenen bzw. des Gegebenen wurden entscheidend fuer den Erfolg der Zwischennutzung, wie ich im Fazit anschliessend noch ausfuehre. Das umfangreiche und durchwegs positive Presse- und Medienfeedback, sowie waehrend der Projektdauer durchgefuehrte Interviews und Fotodokumentationen finden sich im Appendix und in der Marginalspalte des Hauptteils (Chronik) wieder. Auch Vertraege und andere Dokumente sind zum Nachlesen dort angefuegt. Abschliessend stelle ich ein Glossar mit den wichtigsten Begriffsdefinitionen in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik der Zwischennutzung zur Verfuegung. Dies scheint mir auch fuer ein besseres Verstaendnis der theoretischen Ausfuehrungen hilfreich zu sein. Ausserdem biete ich die Moeglichkeit, anhand der in der Chronik angefuehrten Hyperlinks und QR-Codes Online-Zugang zu den entstandenen Videos und anderen Medien zu erhalten, um damit stimmungsvolle Eindruecke der tatsaechlichen Nutzungspraxis zu vermitteln.

This thesis covers the comprehensive documentation of a temporary-use project set in a (semi-) abandoned apartment building in Vienna. The initiation, management and execution of this process-oriented project was carried out over a one and a half year extensive period prior to the refurbishment of the premises (2012-2013). The first part of my thesis deals with the theoretical discourse of the issues of temporarily used spaces. Throughout the process of this 1:1 project I gained a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge about this topic. In accordance to the theory of Action-Research-practice I did not focus singularly on either theoretical or practical research, but intertwined both parts in response to the development of my project. This process-oriented practice does not only define the foundation that allows an openness to the various users and actors of the given space. It also provides room to make mistakes and to use their lessons constructively without great financial jeopardy. Ultimate goal of the project was to create space and time for the creation of a community based on interpersonal, social and informal interactions between individuals. In this sense the work, on a theoretical basis, also deals with the development of tactics for temporary uses, from the International Situationists to the present. Important hereby was not to look merely into historic utopian concepts but also current tendencies. I will discuss strategies of self-organisation and participation, problems and potentials of intermediate uses as well as legal issues in relation to the City of Vienna. The main body of the thesis will concentrate on the documentation of the temporary-use project in Schoenbrunner Strasse 111, that I initiated. This documentation contains an analysis of the variety of possible and actually realized uses, as well as my role as manager of the process. Hereby I try to show not only the different events and project phases but also the operational practice, planning and problems I was faced with and the attempts to solve these issues. Improvisation in general was an important method in dealing with unpredictable problems that come with such a project. As the resume will show, observation, reaction, reflexive action were important for the success of the temporary use. The extensive and quite positive press-and media-feedback, as well as the interviews conducted during the project and a photo documentation can be found in the appendix and in the margin columns of the main part. Lectures and other documentations can be found in this part of the thesis as well. For a better understanding of the discussed issues I have added a glossary with the definitions of the most important terms connected with the issues of temporary uses. To gain some insights into the actual workings and the atmosphere of the project I have added hyperlinks and QR-codes to the chronic that offer access to videos and other media developed during the 1:1 phase.
