dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
This work describes the electrolytic deposition and characterization of Zn-Cr alloy coatings(ZnCr) with target layer thickness of 3.5 to 5.0 μm and target chromium content of 5 %for use as corrosion protection coating for steel. The industrial scale production of ZnCr layers is similar to the continuous electro galvanizingprocess for steel sheets with Gravitel R cells and dimension stable anodes. An acidicsulfate electrolyte was used containing Zn2+ and Cr3+ ions as metal source. Furthermorepolyethylene glycole with a molecular weight of 6000 g mol−1 was added as an organicadditive needed for alloy deposition. The influence of other operating parameters such aspH-value, electrolyte temperature and current density was investigated and optimized. The characterization of the layers has been focused on the properties, which are importantfor the use in automotive industry. These are mainly corrosion protection performance, formability, weldability and paintability resp. phosphatability. Additionally instrumentalanalytical methods like FIB-FESEM, XPS and AES were used to deeply investigatethe layer composition. The correlations between the main operating parameters and thematerial properties were explored to find possibilities to tune the properties. The experiments show an operating window within it is possible to produce ZnCr coatingson steel with equivalent or better properties than Zn coatings with doubled coating thickness.Corrosion protection performance of ZnCr coatings is extraordinary high in flangegeometry and when combined with a corrosion protection primer.
