In strip processing lines, cold-rolled steel strips are transported through industrial annealing lines. During the transport of the strip, a periodic contact between the strip and the furnace rolls occurs. This periodic strip-roll contact can lead to surface defects on the rolls, especially at elevated temperatures. These surface defects are highly influenced by thermochemical and mechanical effects. In order to study the mechanical effects that lead to such defects, a multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) control concept for the curvature and the contact force at the strip-roll contact point of a metal strip is developed and implemented on an experimental test rig. A mathematical model is derived to describe the nexus between the bending moment in the strip and the curvature of the strip. Due to a possible plastic deformation of the strip, the bending history has to be considered. Based on a linear-elastic/plastic constitutive law, a quasistatic strip deformation model is developed and formulated as a boundary value problem. The test rig considered in this thesis is characterized by a multiaxial stress state. However, uniaxial stress states are typically used to specify material parameters. In order to verify the conversion between uniaxial and multiaxial stress states, a novel identification method is developed and verified by measurements on another laboratory experiment. The control concept presented in this work is a multivariable two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) control structure comprising a feedforward and a feedback part. A model inversion of the quasistatic strip deflection model is carried out to compute the feedforward control part. The feedback controller consists of a spatial iterative learning control (ILC) and a multivariable PI controller. The use of disturbance-observer-based ILC allows for a systematic suppression of spatially periodic disturbances and model-plant mismatches. Furthermore, the proposed ILC law is independent of the horizontal velocity of the roll. Measurements on the experimental test rig validate the feasibility and performance of the presented control concept.
