How to allow oil & gas & chemicals producers focus on core competences while modernizing and outsourcing their process water and wastewater utilities & operations : a business plan

Abstract

MBA Thesis - Klemens Kaar (June 2014) Abstract This paper constitutes a business plan for a consulting business specialized in providing solutions for oil & gas firms and petrochemicals producers which intend to modernize, outsource or increase the efficiency of their water- and waste-water utilities. Based on a theoretical background on opportunity identification and exploitation a concrete business plan is drafted which is suitable for an independent start-up as well as for creating a new business unit of an established firm. The business plan explains opportunities from operational & technological innovations in water treatment & reuse facilities of today-s petrochemical industry. Requirements for the founding members and advisors are described since a complementary skill set and expertise are necessary to offer an optimum portfolio of services to clients. Competitors are grouped and analyzed, and measurable industry-relevant performance indicators are derived in order to be able to create better customer value propositions than competitors. An operational plan outlines how the services can be delivered to clients at maximum efficiency and effectiveness. The marketing strategy is intended to gain early reference customers followed by growing number of projects and revenues at defined margins to achieve the financial goals summarized in the financial plan. Potential risks to the new consulting business are identified and respective response strategies are derived in order to maximize positive opportunity exploitation and minimize negative risk exposure.
