The aim of the following work was to describe a capillary flow, which occurs in slot die coating processes. For this purpose the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation for newtonian fluids was used. With suitable boundary conditions a film equation was derived. With this equation it is possible to determine the required gap between slot die and substrate for a given material system, coating speed and film thickness. This model can be used for the design of industrial coating processes. Furthermore, the influence of the process and material parameters on the flow was investigated with the help of the film equation. In the second part of the thesis the limits for a stable coating process were described with the help of a literature research. This allows the determination of limit ranges for a stable coating process. From these the maximum coating speed can be determined. In the last section, the theoretical findings were verified by experiments. For this purpose, a coating was continuously applied to a steel belt on a pilot line. As material system a polyvinyl alcohol solution was used.
