dc.description.abstract
The heat transfer inside a hydraulic actuator for a railway car body is studied using CFD methods. Of particular interest is the temperature of the electric motor which is immersed in hydraulic oil. Although the flow problem is characterized by a small Reynolds number, convective terms in the energy equation play a significant role due to a large Prandtl number. The main result is that the motor temperature can be decreased by improving the heat transfer from the motor block to the hydraulic fluid.
