dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The scarcity of resources, the large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions and the steeply rising price of electricity are just some of the factors that have shifted power generation for the last years towards renewable energy sources. In this process photovoltaics play a central role, as solar energy is an inexhaustible resource. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the effects photovoltaics development in Germany and Austria and to examine the influence of it on the electricity prices and the power plants operation. Starting out from solar radiation data selected for the analyzed region, a linear optimization model for the representation of the electricity market is created and the expansion scenarios of +40, +70 and +100 GW are simulated. Results of the model show that with the growing expansion of photovoltaics, the conventional power plants are being pushed out of the market and even on some days the whole load is covered by renewable energy sources. However, the market value of the plants is to be questioned with an increase of +100 GW as this is up to 40% lower than in the case of the +40 GW scenario. The development of photovoltaics is not the only solution, a linkage of several technologies would ensure more stability, reserve and profitability.
